Additionally, the department consistently ranked in the top four in terms of NIH research dollars when rankings were published. For FY 2014, the UAB Department of OB/GYN ranked second in the US regarding NIH grant awards. Additionally, fifteen OB/GYN faculty members top the latest US News and Report rankings for “Best Doctors in America.” Departmental faculty have a regional, national, and international reputation for quality clinical and especially tertiary subspecialty care. The Department is also renowned for its clinical and translational research and its training of residents and sub-specialists. Training is provided for medical students and residents.

Services

UAB Maternal-Fetal Medicine provides gynecologic oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility services, urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery, and women’s reproductive healthcare. This combination of specialists and subspecialists in their Women & Infants Center allows the team to coordinate care, no matter the need. Their faculty consists of 14 board-certified and nationally recognized physicians. Additionally, one faculty member became board-certified in Medical Genetics. They provide expert, personalized care for the complete range of gynecological needs, including routine and high-risk pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis, and genetic counseling, among many other women’s health concerns.

Specialty

The UAB Maternal-Fetal Medicine established the Center for Women’s Reproductive Health in 1993. Above all, the mission to conduct research aimed at improving the reproductive health and survival of all women and developing scholars interested in women’s reproductive health. UAB Obstetrics and Gynecology also has an extensive MFM division. Their physicians in the MFM Division provide care for women with issues complicating their pregnancies. Such as preterm birth, diabetes, hypertension, multiple gestations, and abnormal placentation. Their MFM also provides genetic screening and counseling services for all pregnant women with genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. Especially those at high-risk based on maternal age, medical status, or prior history, and provide a prenatal diagnosis for fetal abnormalities and continued management/counseling for these complicated pregnancies.
